 UGANDA SPRINTERS SHINE AT KENYA NATIONAL TRIALS.

At the recently concluded Kenya National Trials at kasarani stadium, Ugandans had all reasons to celebrate when two Ugandans dominated in the short sprint race of 200m. Benson Okot ran the 200m final in 21:06 while Jacent Nyamahunge who ran 23:83 a seasons best. Benson says “dominating the Kenyans in short sprints on their home soil is something that had never happened”. In the past, Kenyans who came to attend national trials in Uganda outsprinted Ugandans on home soil. Could this be a turning point in the sprint generation of Uganda?

Benson who also runs 100m with a personal best of 10:32 also took part in the long relay helping he’s Uganda team take second position after a strong third 400m anchoring. “Am grateful for this performance much as we didn’t get the times we really wanted” Benson says. Benson appreciated he’s Coach Peter Gatana for the good training program and sessions that are producing better times.

Jacent Nyamahunge 23 who is coached by Nambawa Sarah says “the race was fairly okay though I didn’t get the time i expected.

Jacent was excited about the performance. “Am so happy for this result, it’s a great improvement and my seasons best” she said. However, we still have a lot to do. On a personal evaluation Jacent added that “I realize I have a poor start, running mechanics correction and other things are needed”. Asked about her buildup training, she says “when we started our training it was not all that full scale due to an accident I had in the past”. Jacent says “I can run better time and make to world class athletics”. Her current plan is to qualify for common wealth games and world championships.

The Kenya trails ended on 19th -june-2021 and have left allot to be expected during Olympics.
