JACOB
KIPLIMO JOINS UGANDA OLYMPIC TEAM.
By Isaac Hanyiga (piano)
Jacob Kiplimo one of Uganda’s favorite long distance runners
qualified for Olympics at the spitzen leichtathletik stadium allmend Luzern in Switzerland beating Kenyan Daniel
Simiyu to second place in a tight race. Jacob beat the qualification mark and
looked calm from the start to the finish of the race.
Jacob ran 12:55:60 ahead of the Kenyan who kept pace with
him to the last lap. With a strong final
kick in the last 100m he won the race against an exhausted Daniel. In a brief interview he was delighted to win
the race. He said “am excited to be part of the Uganda Olympic team. Am so grateful to my
coaches and the organizers of the race”. For me this race was about
qualification and gauging how I feel in my body.
Asked about he’s preparation and training, he added that “My training
is going on well. I hope for something good at the Olympics” kiplimo
who looked relaxed all through the race was asked what was going on in he’s
mind during the race. He said. “The race was good; i knew that in the last
few laps and meters i was going to win the race”.
Kiplimo joins Joshua Cheptegei and Oscar Chelimo who had
already qualified to represent Uganda in the men’s 5000m in Tokyo. The Uganda team
goes to the Olympics as favorites with Joshua holding the world record in 5000m
and 10000m while kiplimo has a world lead of 26:33:39 in 10000m which he ran at
Ostrava in May 2021.They also stand 7th and 8th on current world rankings for the 5000m.
